A true legend of the Twitterverse.John Legend took to Twitter to slam Donald Trump as a racist on Friday, March 11, after the GOP presidential hopeful’s son criticized the protesters who shut down his father’s Chicago rally earlier that day.
Legend, 37, didn’t let the comment slide, and fired back point-blank.
“@DonaldJTrumpJr I think they were protesting your racist father,” the Grammy-winner wrote. “This isn’t complicated.”
Trump Jr. added fuel to the fire with his own response, downplaying the comment as another unnecessary stab at his politician father.
“Here we go again. That can’t be the answer for everything you don’t like,” the businessman replied. “That’s why the country is so divided now!”
Supporters and critics of Trump alike then weighed in with their own thoughts, arguing with Legend, Trump Jr. and each other. One Twitter user found himself in the spotlight after he decided to take a personal jab at Legend — but the singer got the last word.
Legend and both Trumps attended the University of Pennsylvania.
On Friday, protesters at the University of Illinois at Chicago filled the arena where Trump was expected to lead a rally, causing the GOP presidential hopeful to postpone the event due to safety concerns.
Earlier in the week, a black protester at a campaign rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina, was sucker-punched by a man in a cowboy hat (later identified as 78-year-old John McGraw); at least two officers who saw the incident happen did not immediately take action to arrest McGraw.
The man was later charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct.
